First off I would like to say that I would not change anything in my life as it has shaped me into the person I am standing, here, before you today. So, who am I? I am perfectly imperfect! I am kind and compassionate, and I value honesty, integrity, and clear communication, and I want to help everyone to see their own self-worth. I want to take my story forward - to help other First Responders maintain their Mental Fitness and overall Wellness, and to empower them to live a fulfilled and balanced life.
As I reflect back on my journey, I can see now that a lot of the leadership were suffering and barely surviving themselves, so how would I expect them to help me down a path of a healthy lifestyle when they couldn’t help themselves. In 2021, when I accepted my medical discharge I did receive support along my journey of healing, but sadly none of it came from the RCMP. I have recently found a mental health report by NPF from February 2024 which shows a 17.7% increase in Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) just from 2023 to 2024.
So even in the 3 years that I have been out of the force, the rise of PTS is still climbing. It is time for us to get some support for the membership, and what is better to have it come from someone who has lived it. But it’s important to also know I have taken the time to get myself healthy first. Self-care is such an important part of my journey and if I can lead by example I believe that speaks volumes.
I have found and tried many different self-care and mental fitness modalities along my journey; including talk therapy, in-patient trauma treatment centre, life coaching, art & nature therapy, meditation, float pods, and Flourishing Business Coaching. Two of the modalities which help me the most are breath-work and cold water therapy, whether it is a dip or a shower. (Wim Hof is my favourite). I always share with people that by remaining open-minded and trying many different tools and approaches will help them find the right self-care practices to fit their lifestyle; remember it’s not a one size fits all! It is also important to remember to try them more than once (repetition is key). My approach is about changing behaviours and helping them shift their mindset, not just providing knowledge.
I have always wanted to help people, and have discovered even though I am no longer in a uniform helping I am passionate about helping First Responders stay healthy. Their health is so important in order for them to be able to be out on the streets every day, doing what most people couldn’t even dream of doing (helping others at their worst).
